On December 14, 2019, Secretary-General of the CODF Pan Xinchun was invited to participate in the Second Coral Reef International Forum. The theme of the forum was “The idea leads the future ? Technology protects corals”. At the forum, experts and scholars in the field of coral reefs at home and abroad conducted exchanges and discussions on major topics such as sustainable development and coral biology under the global coral reef crisis, and planned to achieve a major alliance between China and the international community in the field of coral reef research, protection and sustainable development.

Secretary-General Pan Xinchun made a keynote speech at the forum. He pointed out that global coral reefs are facing major threats such as warming sea water, ocean acidification, rising sea levels, overfishing, environmental pollution, illegal mining and habitat destruction. We must be alert and united to take strong action to protect coral reefs! He said that as an important part of the natural ecosystem, the Chinese government attaches great importance to its protection, and has carried out fruitful work in legislation, establishment of protected areas, restoration, cultivation and transplantation, and achieved remarkable achievements. In addition, Chinese non-profit organizations have carried out various forms of coral reef protection actions. For example, CODF, as a national public welfare organization, has organized dozens of non-profit organizations along the coast of China to carry out large-scale beach cleanup operations, including the protection of coral reefs. This activity will continue to be carried out. The CODF also considers establishing a special fund to actively support coral reef protection, restoration, scientific research and publicity. The CODF is implementing an international cooperation project on “Promoting Spatial Planning and Helping the Blue Economy” established and funded for countries along the Maritime Silk Road and island countries. It also pays special attention to the protection and restoration of coral reef systems and requires delineation of protection areas to strengthen the protection of corals.
